The All-on-4 dental implant procedure

The All-on-4 dental implant procedure - also known as ‘teeth in a day’, ‘same day teeth’ or the ‘same day smile’ is one of the most popular solutions available for individuals who want to replace an entire arch of teeth permanently in one day.

The concept behind All-on-4 is that only 4 dental implants are used to support an entire arch of teeth instead of the usual 8-10 implants. This treatment is ideal for those individuals who have been told that they do not have enough bone for dental implants or that they may need extensive bone grafting for implant treatment.

With All-on-4 the dental implants are braced together in a way that enables them to support a restoration on the same day and it is more cost effective than solutions that require more implants or extensive bone grafting.

All-on-4: the technical difference

The main difference with the All-on-4 technique is the way in which the implants are fixed in the jaw. Implants are normally inserted into the jaw at a 90 degree angle but with the All-on-4 procedure, two of these (the ones at the rear of the jaw) are inserted tilted at a 45 degree angle towards the front of the jaw bone where the bone density is higher.

What is the benefit of this angled placement of implants?

The mechanics of implants placed at an angle means that as a unit the 4 implants are braced together and any vertical forces are evenly distributed through the jawbone. Also the implants angled towards the front of the jaw take advantage of the additional bone density available for anchorage in this region.

Advantages of the All-on-4 procedure

We have already mentioned improved stability and support, but there are other advantages as well which include:

  • No need for bone grafts
  • Restores functionality and the ability to eat many different foods
  • Improves the structure of the face by prevention your cheeks from sagging
  • Replacement teeth can be fitted in the same session
  • Cheaper and faster than conventional forms of treatment
  • Very little pain and discomfort
  • Lasts up to a lifetime
  • A nice, new smile in just one day

There is also the fact that you can eat normally shortly after this procedure which includes your favourite foods.

Does the procedure always involve 4 implants only?

In the main, yes, but in some cases our dentist may advise 5 or 6 implants. Treatment is determined on an individual basis so your implant dentist will decide how many implants you need. But in over 95% of the cases 4 dental implants are used.

The All-on-4 procedure

You will undergo an examination of your teeth and gums followed by x-rays and a CT scan if necessary.

Any teeth that need to be extracted will be removed first under local anaesthetic and in many cases sedation if required. The 4 dental implants will then be placed into your jawbone according to a digital plan of your treatment using the latest NobelGuide software. You will then rest in a treatment lounge while the technician fabricates your provisional bridge. A few hours later your provisional bridge will be fitted to the implants and you will be able to resume normal activities within a day or so.

After a period of three to six months once the implants have fully integrated with your bone your final bridge will be made and fitted.

How much does the All-on-4 procedure cost?

The cost of All-on-4 treatment varies depending on each individual, how many teeth need to be extracted and the complexity of the treatment. At your consultation with our implant dentist you will be given an indication of the cost of your treatment. As a guide the cost of treatment for a full arch starts from £14,000.
